The pavilion is part of a wider landscape project to improve the public space along the River Kennet in Reading. Where the river passes through the Oracle Shopping centre the existing hard landscaping is upgraded and a new Pavilion restaurant and terrace created.
The Pavilion’s external envelope is a curved band of sandblasted glass channels which adjust to the unusual site boundaries. At night, this glass facade is internally illuminated, and the soft glow reflected in the river. The façade steps up on the South and East elevations with full height openings, allowing natural ventilation and views across the river. The roof is a planted with a biodiverse mix of UK native wildflowers.
The project addresses a number of different site constraints, most importantly the challenge of working within the existing flood plain, a variety of ground levels and preserving the sightlines of existing tenants.
